Why is it that I find myself conforming to world that has destined me for a specific role in society? As a female and as a writer, my goal is to reach out to those who are unaware. Unaware of who we are as women. I am not just a body, nor face, nor any other physical aspect of the human build. I am a mind--a mind that refuses to sit back and pretend that in today's society women and men are equal in the eyes of the public.
I ask myself each day, what is it that makes today's society look towards the female race and consider us as merely sex objects? In historical times it was men who had given women a specific role in civilization and it was women who broke that barrier. However, today it is the influences of media that has caused the historical backslide of equality between the sexes.
Take Cosmopolitan, for example, a well-read piece of commercial literature. Women all over North America read this magazine in hopes of finding tips on beauty and love, yet subconsciously being subjected to discrimination!
Consistently trying to fit the perfect figure (shown in these types of magazines) is what causes the high rate of bulimia, anorexia and other disorders. Does the entertainment industry honestly think that today's women are a healthy 5'11 and 110 pounds of sheer happiness? Yet women buy these magazines with no regard to the mental agony they are putting themselves through.
You tell me, do you feel the same way as I do? Frustration at the inability to fully rise above the world in a sexist society? To feel the imperfections of one's body as we watch music videos full of picture perfect models? What kind of world are children growing up in? A place where they are exposed to the media's perception of what women stand for today? One question: has the battle of the sexes yet to see its ending?
You tell me.
