CameraWare Chatroom FAQ

Q. The chatroom applet won't load... there's just a red [x] in the corner where it should be. What do I do?
A. These chatrooms require that you have Java installed on your computer. Get Java Here.

Q. Help! I can't connect to the chatroom. I get on for a few seconds, and then my connection is closed. Why?
A. Email us with the exact nickname that you used to try logging into the chat server. We can look up the login attempt and determine what's going on.

What ports do I have to have secure on my computer to enable me to connect to your chatroom server?
A. The following ports must be secure (not open or in use) on your computer so you can connect to the chatroom server:

80
81
8080
3128
1080
8081
23

You can determine what ports are in use at anytime on your computer by doing the following:

  • Open the Command Prompt program (Start Menu > Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt)

  • At the flashing cursor, type in the following:

    netstat/a

Then press the Enter key on your keyboard.

  • The results of the command will be displayed for you to see if the port numbers listed above are open or in use.

If any of the ports are open/in use, you need to determine which program is using them and either configure it to not use that port, or reboot your system and not run that program while you want to connect to the chat server.

For example, if you are running a webserver on your computer, you can reconfigure the webserver port to be different than port 80, etc. Additionally, programs like Skype use port 80, or sending files via Yahoo Messenger. So you want to make sure you're not running them to connect to chat. Do the netstat/a command before trying to access the chatroom to make sure you don't get banned again.

Q. What do I do if I've been banned from accessing chat because I had one of the above ports insecure?
A. Email us with the exact nickname you tried logging in with. Include your real IP address if possible. We'll remove the server ban so you can secure your ports and try connecting again.

Q. How do I chat with the people on cam in CameraWare that I see?
A. It's up to each broadcaster whether or not they want to tell you where exactly they are chatting. They will usually tell you what chatroom/community they are in by typing the URL or the name of the CameraWare Community into the blue viewer text to the left of their image.

If the URL is correctly typed in, you can click directly on it and a new browser window will open to that URL.

Not everyone on cam chats in a chatroom. Sometimes they just put little text messages in the blue viewer text area. Sometimes nothing at all. It's up to the broadcasters what they want to do! So if you can't figure out how to chat with a specific broadcaster, you can go on cam and invite them to chat (perhaps they will see your cam and viewer text!) or find a different broadcaster to chat with.

A short list of CameraWare Community sites can be found here, with most of the popular ones listed.

Q. How do I get my own free chatroom on your server?
A. We are happy to provide free chatrooms to people who create their own CameraWare Community. You just need to have the CameraWare free viewer on the same webpage that you're going to put the chatroom on. Then email us with the following information:

  • Subject: Free CameraWare Chatroom
  • Exact URL of your CameraWare Community
  • Name you want for your chatroom

We'll create your chatroom, and email you within 48 hours with the HTML code for it.
