CameraWare Video Sender FAQ

Q. What do I need in order to start broadcasting live video on CameraWare?
A. You must have a webcam, pc camera or camcorder with a video capture card. You can then download the CameraWare Video Sender and begin broadcasting your live video! See our tutorial on the CameraWare Video Sender.

Q. Is there a limit to the number of webcams that can broadcast on CameraWare at the same time?
A. No limits.

Q. How fast is the video sending rate on CameraWare?
A. The free viewer displays your live video images about once every 10 seconds. The CameraWare Standalone Viewer program displays the top 20 broadcaster images about every 2-3 seconds. The rest of the broadcasters receive an approximate 5-7 second refresh rate.

Q. Can I advertise my website and/or products on CameraWare?
A. Yes you can! See our CameraWare Video Sender Tutorial and our Slideshow Tutorial for more details on how it works. A CameraWare License is required to use the slideshow feature.

Q. What kinds of images does the Slideshow feature support?
A. JPG/JPEG images.

Q. What is the difference between Login Name and Broadcast Name when I login to the Video Sender?
A. The Login Name is your name, the owner of the broadcasting account. The Broadcast Name is the name that you want displayed in the Channel Menu for your viewers/fans to see during your broadcast.

Q. When I try to broadcast video, my name does not show up on the broadcaster list. I can see my preview image. I can broadcast on other webcam sites. What should I do?
A. Some possible solutions are:

  • When you login to CameraWare, make sure you do NOT choose the Private category or Closed Community. If you do, your broadcast camera name will not show up on the list.

  • If you are running a firewall program such as Norton, Black Ice, or Zone Alarm, you must either lower the security settings, or you can configure the firewall to allow cwvs.exe as a trusted server or application.

  • Try a different ISP (Internet Service Provider) to see if the problem is with the one you are currently using. Some ISPs do not support the large UDP packets that CameraWare uses to receive images.

  • If that all fails, you might need to replace your modem.

Q.My firewall software is showing that IP 66.28.246.2 is accessing my port 31001 about 16 times an hour. Why?
A. CameraWare sends frame-delay and stats information to all broadcasters. IP 66.28.246.2 is the ONLY IP address we send the data from. So it's cool... not an intrusion!

Q. I have plugged my webcam into my 4 port USB hub, but I get no image. Why?
A. All webcams need to be plugged into a powered USB hub. If your USB hub is unpowered, you will not be able to run your webcam through it. You can also plug your webcam directly into a USB port on your computer. That'll work just dandy.

Q. I have put a secret code on my live video broadcast. Why does it show that I have viewers in the status area above my preview image?
A. Even though you have a secret code on your video, when somebody clicks on your broadcast name from the Channel Menu in the viewers, it will still show that your broadcast name has been clicked on. However, unless they know the secret code you assigned, they will not be able to view your broadcast.

Q. I pasted the HTML code for a Closed Community Applet into my webpage. When I login to the CameraWare Video Sender and place a checkmark in the Closed Community checkbox, I am asked for a License Key. Why?
A. Logging into a Closed Community is a CameraWare License feature. You've got to buy a license in order to use the Closed Community selection in the Video Sender. It's free to broadcast live video on CameraWare.

Q. Do I have to be on the CameraWare website in order to broadcast my video?
A. No. You are not required to have any browser window or chatroom open in order to broadcast your video. All you need to do is run the CameraWare Video Sender from the shortcut on your desktop and log in!

Q. How soon can I broadcast live after I download the Video Sender?
A. As soon as you are done installing the Video Sender, you can login and broadcast live... provided of course your webcam or pc camera is installed and ready (powered on) too!

Q. What should the size of my video be?
A. 320x240

Q. Why don't I see my preview image in the Video Sender? It's just black.
A. Make sure that you have the correct video driver device chosen:

  • In the toolbar above your preview image window, click on Video > Choose Video Device.

  • Select the correct video device driver you wish to use.

If your video device driver is not listed, you should uninstall and reinstall it, with any new updates available from the manufacturer's website. This usually solves that issue. Additionally, make sure your video device driver actually supports live video conferencing. Some capture cards only support movie/video editing and not live video.

Q. How do I know if my video is being broadcast?
A. Above your preview video in the Video Sender is a Status Area which will say "Your broadcast can now be seen over the Internet" if your images are successfully being transmitted.

After a few minutes you will receive some statistics in your Status Area. These super cool statistics show the number of live viewers you have, the total number of viewers you have had in the last hour, the top live broadcast and the top hourly broadcast. These stats are updated every 5 minutes.

Q. How do others see my broadcast?
A. They have to be on a website with a free CameraWare viewer like those listed on our CameraWare Communities list, or using the CameraWare Standalone Viewer. Then they just pull up the Channel Menu, look for your broadcast name, click on it, and wallah!! There you are :-)

Q. Why would I ever choose PRIVATE for my CameraWare category?
A. If you want to show just YOUR camera and/or friends' cameras from your Web site, and you do not want the rest of the world to see your images, you would then choose the Private category. A CameraWare License is required to use the Private category option in the Video Sender.

Q. I have a CameraWare License and wish to broadcast using the Private category. How do I configure the free viewer to show my image only?
A. Follow the instructions on our Webmasters Page specifically for the Private viewer and login instructions. This specially configured viewer has to be embedded on a webpage where your viewers can access it.

Q. Is there any way I can use the CameraWare Standalone Viewer program to display my Private or Closed Community broadcast?
A. Not at this time, sorry. Only public and secret coded broadcasts are seen in the Channel Menu of the CameraWare Standalone Viewer.

Q. What is the SECRET CODE under Options above my preview video in the Video Sender?
A. If you have purchased a Cameraware License you can put a secret code on your broadcast. Then, only those who know your secret code will be able to view it! It's up to you to give the code out to whoever you want to see your broadcast.

Q. How do I use the Secret Code feature?
A. In the Video Sender toolbar, click on Options > Enter/Remove Secret Code. Then type in a code. We strongly recommend that you use a secret code consisting of at least 15 characters. For example:

  the rain in spain

To make your video public again, go back to Options > Enter/Remove Secret Code. Then remove the secret code.

Remember, no one will be able to see your broadcast images until you remove the secret code.
