Free CameraWare Viewer FAQ

Q. I can't see the images in the free viewer -- all I see is NO IMAGE in the middle. Help?!
A. Your firewall software is blocking CameraWare. As a test, completely disable your firewall software. Then reload the free viewer. If that works then you can re-enable your firewall, and configure it to allow CameraWare in/out as a Trusted IP/Server. The following information will help:

Port: UDP Port 31001
Server/IP: relay.cameraware.com
Programs: cwvs.exe and cwviewer.exe

If you have questions on how to configure your firewall, we suggest that you contact the software vendor or documentation/support for specifics as we're just not expert in all different firewall software programs. :)

Q. How do I obtain the secret code for a broadcaster?
A. You have to get the secret code from the broadcaster themselves. Sometimes in the blue area to the left of the broadcaster's video, there will be text with instructions on how to contact them for the secret code. Otherwise, you cannot get in to see that particular video. Broadcasters reserve the right to keep their broadcasts private and to be selective about who is viewing their webcam images.

Q. How do I rewind and zoom in on the live videos?
A. Here are several nifty ways you can control the video you are watching:

  • To ZOOM IN, left-click directly on the image.

  • To ZOOM OUT, right-click directly on the image.

  • To PAUSE, left-click on the small green box in the bottom right corner of the viewer. This causes the green box to turn yellow, freezes the image, and puts a "0" in the box. The "0" means CURRENT IMAGE. To REWIND, left-click again and you will go back to PREVIOUS IMAGES.

  • To go FORWARD again through the images after rewinding, right-click on the small green box in the bottom right corner of the viewer. In this manner you can go back and forth. If you right-click on image "0" then the box goes green again and you are live!

Q. How many image frames can I rewind?
A. You can rewind up to 50 images in the free CameraWare viewer. (The CameraWare Standalone Viewer lets you rewind up to 100 images!)

Q. Is there a limit to how many viewers can watch the CameraWare webcam images?
A. No. The proprietary technology behind CameraWare allows for an unlimited number of simultaneous broadcasts, and an unlimited number of simultaneous viewers!

Q. What is the image refresh rate in the free viewers?
A. All webcam broadcasts seen in the free CameraWare viewers (in webpages) get an approximate 10 second refresh rate.

Q. I am connected through a cable modem and I find it slow downloading webpages with the viewing applets and chatrooms. Any suggestions?
A. If you are using Internet Explorer (IE), try setting your cache size to 1MB. IE does not manage its cache very well when there are a lot of images. To reduce the IE cache size, do the following:

  • In the menu, click on Tools > Internet Options > General tab

  • Under the Temporary Internet files heading, click on Settings... and move the gray arrow to the far left (under Amount of disk space to use) or enter a value of 1 in the box next to MB.

  • Click on the OK buttons at the bottom until you are out of IE Tools.

Q. When I try to view the broadcast cams, they load, refresh only once and then freeze. When I return to any cam that I have previously viewed, the image remains in the frozen state that I left it in. What is happening?
A. Your ISP is using a transparent proxy server which is not delivering the new images to you. Here is the solution:

  • On the CameraWare viewer click on the little green "cw" to the left of where it says "Click Here >>> Choose a Camera".

  • A Debug window will open. Click on the checkbox beside Proxy Server. Make sure there's a check in the box.

  • Click on Dismiss. Then the images should refresh normally for you in the free viewer.

NOTE: You will have to do this each and every time you load a new CameraWare viewer. You can contact your ISP and ask them how they can route your Internet connection around their proxy server.

Q. I can no longer view broadcasts! The screen comes up but the viewing applets are just gray boxes. What do I do?
A. Whenever updated java applets are installed, it becomes necessary to clear the browser cache to get a fresh page. You need to clear your Internet browser cache in order to load the viewing applets and/or chat applets properly. Here's the steps:

  • In IE, click on Tools > Internet Options > General tab

  • Under the Temporary Internet Files heading, click on the Delete Files button.

  • Then click on the OK button when it's all done.

  • Close all windows, and restart your browser.

  • In Netscape, click on Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Cache

  • Click on the 2 Clear Cache buttons.

  • Then close all windows, and restart your browser.

Q. I have cleared my Internet browser cache and installed all Windows Updates available for my computer. I still cannot load the java video applets in a webpage. What do I do?
A. If you have installed the Sun Java Plugin, please try uninstalling all versions of it first. To find out if you have installed the Sun java plugin:

  • Start Menu > Settings > Control Panel > Add Remove Programs

  • Look for any reference to Sun Java Plugin

  • Remove all that you find by highlighting each one, then click on Remove.

  • If no Sun Java Plugins are listed, or you have removed all of them, close the Add/Remove Programs window and the Control Panel window.

Reinstall Java by going to www.java.com.

When the reinstallation is complete, go to www.cameraware.com/techroom.html and see if the free viewer and chatroom applet load for you there.

If you still have problems loading the viewer, email us with a description of what's going on... as much detail as possible.

Q. I notice that when I am watching more than one free CameraWare viewer, the video seems to go slower. Why is that?
A. It's true. With each added free java viewer that you are watching, the image speed will slow down by at least 2 seconds per viewer. This does not happen when using the CameraWare Standalone Viewer.
